Bad Advice About Money

Before you read any further, look at the picture to the right. That is a picture of Jared Goodman. Now, ask yourself, do you really want to be taking financial advice from some hipster doofus sporting a tie-dyed shirt, flashing a peace sign, lying on the hood of what is probably someone else’s car and who is likely to be listening to some endless Phish jam as you read this? Well do you?

Jared Goodman owns and runs the site, GreenbackCafe.com, and is solely responsible for its content. Please note that Jared Goodman is not an investment advisor, and has absolutely no idea if any particular stock and/or investment/trading strategy is appropriate for your personal situation. I cannot emphasize this enough: the writing here should not in any way be construed as investment or trading advice. Speak to your financial advisor and do your own homework before investing.

So, what is this site, anyhow? – Good question. I initially just wanted someplace where I could record my trades and the reasons for them. How I succeeded or failed, and lessons learned. Yes, some interesting information will be disseminated; and yes, I will state my opinions. Again, these opinions are NOT those of a finance professional, just of some guy (me) learning about trading the hard way. I will attempt to disclose my positions as completely as possible. Nevertheless, whenever someone says something about a specific stock, you should assume they have a position. For example, if I write something nice about Yoyodyne Industries and their incredible new flux capacitor technology, you should assume (even if I haven’t gotten around to disclosing it yet …) that I have a position in Yoyodyne. Unless I say otherwise. Likewise, if I say something nasty about Stark Industries, I’m probably shorting it or own some puts.

In short, be skeptical and circumspect of anything and everything you read here.

Position disclosures within articles will not be updated when those positions change. Realize that I trade options and some of the strategies involved are short-term. I will typically describe exit conditions (stop-loss, limits, trailing stops, etc.)  and it should be assumed that if such conditions have not occurred by expiration, the options expired. In-the-money shorted options will probably be assigned, and the covering options will be exercised in tandem. Unless otherwise noted, trading journal type articles are written after the fact of the trade.

Are you sure you want to be reading this?

Should you be foolish enough to invest in the securities and derivatives discussed on GreenbackCafe.com, realize that to do so is risky and speculative. The positions discussed are probably illiquid, volatile, and just all-around bad investment ideas. When I make trades, I am ready to lose everything I put into them. Are you? This is why I only trade with my risk capital; I do not trade with my retirement savings, home equity, or my kids’ education funds.

I also have long positions in a couple of mutual funds and ETFs — that’s what my 401(k) and Roth IRA are invested in.

Privacy: Cookies and Personal Information

In order to enhance the user experience, we may use session cookies that keep track of registration information and the like. We do collect some information about all visitors, including IP addresses that could allow a third party to identify individuals.

To tell you the truth, this is a responsibility I would rather not have and I am looking into methods of expunging as much of this information as possible on a regular basis. Look for an official Greenback Cafe IP retention policy to be established when I get around to it — as with so many other things, this is on my “to-do list”.

I may also aggregate visitor data to the site in general and its individual pages. I may also use third party software or services to accomplish the same goal.  I am not, however, trying to tie any specific activity to specific individuals.

In addition, advertisers on GreenbackCafe.com may place tracking cookies in your browser’s cache in order to deliver more focused marketing messages. In both cases (i.e., GreenbackCafe.com’s cookies and third-party cookies), it is possible to disable cookie creation in your browser’s Options or Tools area. It is similarly possible to remove old cookies from your browser’s cache.

Here is what Google has its advertisers say on the matter of cookies:

Advertising partners and other third parties may also use cookies, scripts and/or web beacons to track visitors to our site in order to display advertisements and other useful information. Such tracking is done directly by the third parties through their own servers and is subject to their own privacy policies.

  • Google, or another third party vendor, uses cookies to serve ads on Greenback Cafe;
  • Specifically, Google uses the “Double Click DART Cookie” to enable serving ads to Greenback Cafe visitors based on their visit to this and other sites on the Internet — one should assume that other third party vendors do the same;

By the way, I’m too busy with a lot of other stuff, so I won’t keep track of your email addresses. If you end up getting spam, it won’t be because I sold your address and it won’t be from me. Why? A) Selling email addresses is a despicable way to make a buck; and B) Look, I don’t even email my friends all that much — what makes you think you’re so important that I would email you?

So, that’s my disclaimer. I hope you’re happy now. Remember, if you do anything stupid, don’t come and try suing me — it’s your own damn fault. All of it.

As for your privacy, I really could not care less who the hell you are. If you’re really that paranoid, maybe you shouldn’t be reading this. Now, go away.
